The busy hospital scene of Blessed Gerard in Jerusalem depicts members of the Order of St. John caring for the poor, the sick, the needy – truly anyone who came for help. The Order of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, or Order of Malta, is a worldwide, lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church founded in 1099 by the Benedictine lay brother, Blessed Gerard Sasso. (1040-1120) The order carries out its charitable works “for the sick, the needy and refugees without distinction of religion, race, origin or age.” A recently excavated 12th century hospital of the Order of St. John in Jerusalem is the basis for the architecture and this historic structure is due south of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The 12th century silhouette of that church can be seen through the large window arch in the painting.
