Christopher Santer writes:
The drawing of "Young Christ Sleeping" is a purposeful departure in both style and content from my prior collection of print images. Ever since its creation I have been captivated by this singular, stark image. It holds particular weight in my mind because it simultaneously contains two powerful and contradictory themes: The gentle innocence of the child Jesus, and the sorrowful foreshadowing of the deposition from the cross. At the center of the drawing lies a resting hand, echoing both life and death. I think of Mary, who watched with complete joy as her child grew to adulthood, but whose heart was pierced, as Simeon had prophesied (Luke 2:33-35), witnessing the death of her son on Calvary.
